Jesus wants you to have joy in your life. Did you know that He’s given us joy? Let’s reflect and meditate today on John chapter 15, verse 11, and Jesus is speaking to his disciples and through them to us. “These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full.”
Let’s ask ourselves some questions about this passage.
Question one, how does this reflect Jesus? Jesus was a person of joy. He has great delight. He had union, complete Union with his father and the Holy Spirit, and that is a relationship of complete satisfaction and joy, and Jesus wants that joy for us. He wants us to receive this same kind of joy, the joy of relationship, the joy of certainty, the joy of knowledge that we have an eternal destiny to look forward to that will be full of pleasure.
This tells us a lot about the loving and generous character of Jesus. Question two, what does this tell me about myself? If I am lacking in joy, it tells me perhaps that I am not pressing into God, that I have not fully received from him this joy that he wants to be in us, and he says he wants to be full. Yes, it’s possible that in life we may have grief, heartache, bereavement, sadness, trouble difficulty. But through all of that, there is this undercurrent of joy that’s available to us because of the fundamental truths that are unchanged by our circumstances.
God is still God. Jesus still loves and cares for us. The Holy Spirit is still living within us, and we have this wonderful eternal destiny to look forward to. Question three, do I believe this? I say, yes, I do believe, and Lord God help my unbelief.
Throughout my life, I have seen God prove to me, to my complete satisfaction that he is real and that he has made wonderful promises to us: that we are going to benefit from the fulfillment of those promises. He sent us Jesus, who really was the best proof of the existence of God. Jesus rose from the dead and in doing that, defeated sin and death.
Yes, I believe it. Yes, sometimes I doubt, but God is gracious and merciful to us. He knows our weakness. He knows that sometimes we doubt him, and yet he still continues to love us and be faithful to us.
Thank you, God, that you are a God of joy and thank you that you are willing to share that joy with us. Please fill our hearts with that joy so that it will be full as you have said. Please help us to keep our eyes on you, the author of joy, for your name and for the sake of your glory, God. Amen.
