Do you ever find yourself thinking, I don’t even know what to do anymore, where to go, who to turn to? The Psalmist identifies with this feeling. Psalm 143 verse 8. Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

This to me seems really practical. If I’m at the start of a day, or indeed at any other point of the day, and feeling like I just don’t know anymore, You know that feeling? We turn to God and first we say, "Let me hear of your steadfast love."

It’s so reassuring, isn’t it? To know that someone loves you. And the love that God gives is truer and purer and more faithful than any other love we will ever experience. So to hear of that love, first thing, is extremely reassuring and we can trust him.

And then we go on to say to this faithful, loving God, tell us what we should do. We’re lifting up our souls to you. We are saying of our lives this is God’s now. I’ve tried doing it my way. It doesn’t work. Show me your way, God.

What a practical Psalm. What a practical prayer for us to pray. What a joyful thing to meditate on. Meditating on the love of God, his trustworthiness, his ability to direct us, and his worthiness to be worshipped. Why not pray this with me?

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love. For in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go. For to you I lift up my soul. Amen.
