Are you anxious? – Matthew 6:25 | 2-minute meditation (Bible verse)

Description

Overcoming anxiety is easier said than done. One positive step we can take is to meditate on Matthew 6:25.

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Matthew 6, verse 25. “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

Jesus is talking about us getting our priorities straight. He isn’t saying that food and drink and clothing are irrelevant. What he’s saying is that life is more important, it’s more important to him and it should be more important to us.

It’s interesting isn’t it, that Jesus when he came to earth, he didn’t come as a spirit only, he came as a person. And he recognises that our bodies, they are part of us, they are an expression of us.

And also important is life. God breathes life into us. And it is his life that is being lived in us when we come to Jesus and when his Spirit indwells us. But right at the start of this verse, Jesus is saying a difficult thing. Do not be anxious.

And the reason that he’s suggesting that we have no need to be anxious about these material things, is that he wants to impress on us the greater importance of other things. So yes, it is important that we take care of our bodies. It is important that we feed and clothe it. But it is more important that we have an encounter, with the risen Christ. It is more important that we recognise that we have an eternal inheritance in the kingdom of God.

Thank you, God, for your care and the way in which you seek to put our minds and our hearts at rest and for us to be at peace. Amen.
