If it seems to us that some people are receiving better or worse treatment in life than they deserve, we can take great comfort from meditating on Romans chapter two, verse 11, which says: For God shows no partiality.

God is supremely just, it’s one of his core and central characteristics. He is not going to show favouritism at all. The Bible repeats this.

So what do we make of it then when people seem to be getting better or worse deals than we think we deserve? Well, firstly, I would say that we need to understand that we don’t have God’s perspective on life. We can’t possibly have.

He is omniscient. He knows absolutely everything and his wisdom far exceeds ours. We lean in trust on God to understand that whatever he does is right and good. So that that means in the entire spread of time and history, we can believe in God’s lack of partiality. We can believe in his complete righteousness and justice in how he treats us all.

The truth is that we all through our sin, deserve to be slaughtered. The wages of sin is death, and yet God sent Jesus to ensure that the punishment that we deserved fell on him rather than us.

So no, God is not showing partiality. He’s showing grace and mercy to all who will receive Jesus and believe on his name.

What do we make then of the life that sometimes has suffering and sometimes has great riches? Nothing much because all of this will pass away. What we can cling onto is the truth that the greatest treasure is the Kingdom of God. And that is reserved for all of us who will call on the name of Jesus.
