The Holy Spirit is widely recognized to be a dynamic force in the life of the Christian. So how do you get the Holy Spirit? How are you filled with the Holy Spirit? Let’s meditate today on Acts chapter two, verse 38. And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
To Peter, it seems that it’s an inevitable consequence of this gospel transaction, where we turn away completely from our sins, when we step out in obedience, then we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. So this is the case for all believers who have done this. If you have believed on the name of Jesus Christ, if you are walking in obedience to him, your sins are forgiven and you have received the gift of the Holy Spirit.
So one of the first things we need to do is to accept the truth of this. God’s Holy Spirit is at work in our lives. And we should see this in the transformation of our character as the Fruit of the Holy Spirit starts to grow in us. If you want the power of the Holy Spirit, well, I would just suggest that the thing that we seek first is the Kingdom of God and the gifts are added to us afterwards.
The gift of the Holy Spirit living and working inside us is gift enough for all Christians. The so-called “power gifts” may seem highly desirable, but my friends of the first and greatest importance is for us to seek God himself. And he has helped us with that by placing his Holy Spirit within us. When we repent, when we obey, he then indwells.
Thank you God for this incredible gift that you give to us. The Holy Spirit. How could we live our lives without him working inside of us. You knew what we needed. And you in your generosity have given. We praise you O Lord. Amen.
