In 1 John 2, verse 1, we read this, My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.

John knows that the message of the Gospel should cause us to run in obedience towards our Father, wishing to serve Him and to love Him and grateful that we’ve been saved, permanently saved. But he also knows that we are weak.

So he reassures us, even if we do sin, we have this advocate, we have this lawyer standing between us and God. And this is the unbeatable lawyer. This is the advocate who never fails.

So we know that even if we’ve broken the law, Jesus is going to say, "Yes, but that has been paid for." This person had to serve his time, but I did it for him, for her. So, there is no further punishment due.

This is amazing. I mean, this doesn’t mean that we have a license to sin as much as we want to. No, this is the reason that we can walk free. This is the reason why we have so much gratitude towards God, knowing that the sin is dealt with.

So, we don’t need to panic if we do fall into sin. We just need to accept that this is forgiven. God accepts us and loves us. It’s all dealt with, and we can move on.

And we can live in his love, and we can hope to serve him better each day. We can hope to live in abundant life that he gives to us.

What a remarkable exchange Jesus made for us. His death means that we don’t need to fear punishment ever again.
