We find a lovely little proverb in my favourite book, Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes 7 verse 9. Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

Oh dear, how true is that. How true is it that when something irritates us, when something winds us up, when something annoys us, it goes in deep.

And we nourish it. We feed on it. And it grows, and we feel hard done to. We feel like our rights have been ignored. And it makes us increasingly angry.

And the writer of Ecclesiastes says, You fool! If you let anger live there, if you let anger remain there, you are injuring yourself. You’re not injuring anybody else.

And we know that sin is no good for us. But how does anger injure us? It takes away our joy of life. It takes away our view of Jesus and all that he did for us.

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry. The fruit of the Spirit is love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and gentleness and self control.

These are all the opposite of anger. So we ask for the fruit of the Spirit to grow in our lives so that we don’t have the anger lodging in our hearts and so that we aren’t foolish.

God, thank you for reminding us that we need to keep focused on you, that we need to allow your Spirit to do his work in us, and that we need you to transform us. And thank you that you do that. Amen.
