Do we understand how much God protects us? David did. Let’s look at Psalm chapter three, verse three, and meditate on this. But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

David understood that even though people were saying to him, God’s not going to rescue you, that they were wrong. God himself protected his servant David. God himself protects us, even when it feels like he’s not, even when it feels like he’s left us, exposed, to suffer, to go through trials. God is the shield about us.

He protects us by giving us an ultimate destiny, by giving us an eternal future. And he knows what those who come against us don’t know: that we are going to see God face to face, for real.

And when he lifts our head, when God lifts our gaze, he is lifting our gaze to him. He is lifting our gaze to heaven.

This gives us a greater perspective than the attackers of David had here. Our perspective is that God has everything under control, and in all things he is working for the good of those who love him and who are called according to his gracious and mighty purpose.

Thank you God, because you indeed are a shield about us, and you do lift our heads. Help us to keep our gaze fixed on you.

Amen.
