Will you meditate with me on 1 Chronicles 16 verse 11? Seek the Lord and his strength. Seek his presence continually.

I don’t know your situation, but mine is that I am continuing to maintain a bedside vigil with my son who’s terminally ill, and we don’t know how much longer it will be before he goes to be with the Lord, but it will be soon. And this is definitely a time when we need God’s strength; strength to endure this trial as all trials.

And this verse in Chronicles tells us where to go for our strength, and that is to the Lord. And we need to remember, don’t we, to continue going to the Lord for strength. When we feel that we have enough strength of our own, because that’s not a good way for us to go through life, relying on our own strength instead of God’s. Unless the Lord builds a house, the workers labour in vain. So we do everything in God’s strength.

But in Chronicles, we are told not simply to seek the strength of the Lord. We’re not going to the Lord simply for what he gives us, for what he’s got. We’re seeking the Lord personally for his presence, and that is what we want right now in this moment. We need, as a family, we need the presence of God.

We need the presence of God to be with us. We need the presence of God to be with Morgan, my dying son. We need the presence of God to be with James, his identical twin. Sharon and I, his parents, need the presence of God. So we are seeking that, too.

But we don’t just need God’s strength and presence right now. Oh, how we need it now. But we all need to seek the Lord’s presence continually to remain close to him. This is the only way to live. When we wander away from God, do things go well?

Lord, please remain with us. We want to remain with you. Your glory and your presence are what we seek. We love you, God. Amen.
