We don’t like it when other people boast, do we? But do we allow ourselves to boast? Listen to what Paul says about boasting generally in Galatians chapter 6 verse 14. But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Now the boasting that he’s immediately talking about is the boast that some Jews might have had that they’d made converts, that they’d brought people into the fold, as it were. And if the Holy Spirit uses us to bring people to Christ, that’s fantastic, but we don’t boast about it, Paul says.

And why do we not boast? Well, all the things about the world that were previously delightful to him, they have been crucified to him. The world’s pleasures, the world’s titles, they don’t matter anymore. And the opposite has happened too. He has been crucified to the world, so that as far as the world’s concerned, he doesn’t matter.

What then matters? The cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. That is what we boast about. We can boast, we can say that Jesus Christ died for me. He died for you. That is the most important thing that has happened in the entirety of human history. And it involves us. That sacrifice of Jesus acquires our salvation.

And so we thank you, God. We thank you for the crucifixion of Christ. You did it for us. You did it out of your love for us. You did it because your purpose was to have a people who would love you and who you would love, to be united in a relationship for all of eternity. The God of the universe did that and he was thinking of us when he did. That’s some boast. Thank you, Father God. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Holy Spirit. Amen.
