We have to be slightly careful with today’s verse, but nevertheless, it has a beautiful message for us. See what I mean. Job chapter 33, verse 4. The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Now, the reason we have to be cautious with this is that this verse is part of Elihu’s speech, and Elihu is one of Job’s friends who’s come along with some fairly pompous words to say to him, and not necessarily everything he says should be taken as gospel. But in this verse, I think he’s nailed it.
He says that the Spirit of God has made him. And that’s right. We believe that. We believe that God himself is actively involved in the creation process of every single human being.
And sometimes we, we might think of ourselves, well, there’s something wrong with me. How could I possibly have been made by God?
And I know from my experience of living with disabled twins, one of whom has now gone to be with the Lord, that nothing could be further from the truth. My son, Morgan, who was profoundly disabled, his body didn’t function correctly, he was one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever known. The Spirit of God made him, and the Spirit of God made you, my friend.
The breath of Almighty God gives you life. It is through His conscious, active wish that you are still alive today.
Elihu is right. God has made us, and God doesn’t make mistakes. You are here with purpose because God wanted you to be, and his breath is still in your lungs.
