Today’s verse is one of the most hopeful, faith enriching verses in the Bible, I think. Genesis 50, verse 20. As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today.
So, of course, this is from the story of Joseph. His brothers nearly left him for dead, uh, sold him into slavery. And Joseph has experienced many years languishing in a prison. And God turns it all around and he brings salvation through Joseph to the, all the Egyptians and the Israelites around them. That is the means through which they survive a vast widespread famine.
And I see this principle at work that God brings what looks like evil, even the very evil intentions of people are working towards the good that God intends. This is hard to accept sometimes. Surely God doesn’t want these evil things to happen. Well, no, of course, he’s a God of good. But He is so good that the evil that men and women do cannot defeat His overall good plans.
And I think about what I’ve experienced this year. My son died. I watched him die. And that was just horrible. There’s no denying that that is a tragic, tragic event for us.
And yet, at his celebration of life just a few weeks later, there was such a sense of peace and joy as my son Morgan has entered into rest and joy, who’s now with his Father in heaven. Nothing can prevent God’s goodness from enduring .
Thank you God for your goodness. Thank you that you defeat evil. All the time you are thwarting plans. Thank you God that nobody is greater than you and your will will be done. Amen.
