Let’s meditate today on Deuteronomy chapter 30 verse 19. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life that you and your offspring may live.

Now if you’ve read the Old Testament you’ll probably be familiar with this. God is giving the Israelites the choice between blessings and curses. Do they follow God? Do they reject him?

And, some people seem to think that the God of the Old Testament, all doom and thunder is different from the God of the New Testament. And I say he’s no different because look what he’s doing for the Israelites.

He’s saying choose between blessing and curse. And what does he do now in the New Testament times when we’ve got Jesus and his sacrifice and what he’s done for us at the cross? He says choose between blessing and curses. Choose life by following Christ and accepting him, or choose death and curses by rejecting Christ and turning away from our God.

So it is an easy choice, isn’t it? To choose between the good and the bad. And this isn’t God saying, "Oh, I will only accept people who follow me. I’m going to reject everybody else because I’m a petty God." God is not like that.

God is who he is. And the reality of this universe that he has created is that the only way to life, the only way to joy and peace is His way, because His way is good. So obviously, if you want good things, you have to go the good way.

This God is no different today from yesterday. He is the same forever. So let us continue to choose life, that we and our children and their children may live in His blessing.
