Transcript

Listen to this from Ecclesiastes, chapter 5, verse 2. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God. For God is in heaven, and you are on earth. Therefore, let your words be few.

I imagine if I’d gone into the presence of the wisest person on earth, somebody who was known to be extremely clever, very gifted, super insightful. If I was in that person’s presence, would I gabble on and on? No. I would stop, I would listen, I might ask a question or two, but then I would give that person my fullest attention, knowing that from that person would come vast stores of wisdom.

So why would it be any different with God? He is clearly wiser, more gifted, more knowledgeable than any human ever could be, even that wisest ever person that I’ve just described. Being in His presence, why would we want to talk? Because we know that he has the words of eternal life. His is the voice that spoke the universe into existence.

So of course, there’s no point us going on and on and on. We should listen, we should hear, we should spend time meditating, waiting on him. Because he is in heaven, we are on earth. That emphasises the difference between us. God is so high, and yet, he speaks to us. So let our words be few.

Father God. I know you love to hear from us. I know you are not harsh with us. But sometimes we forget God to listen. We speak and speak and speak and then we move on. And you are a speaking God if we only stop and wait and listen. Thank you that you are kind to us and patient. Amen.
