1 Peter 3 verse 15 is such a well known verse, especially among apologists. But in your hearts, honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and respect.

We start by honouring Christ, seeing him as holy, and being ready to speak about why we have faith, why we have hope but doing it with a godly, gracious attitude. And we could take this a few ways, couldn’t we, if we’re meditating on this verse. But one of the things I like to ask myself is, what is the reason for my hope?

I like to think about philosophical reasons why we have hope why there is a universe, why there is a God, how could that possibly be the case? There is something rather than nothing, and we know from our experience that things don’t pop into existence out of nothing. And so it was with the universe that required an awesome power that is self existent and that can only be God.

But then down in the dirt in the grime of my life, my existence, why do I have hope when I have witnessed so much suffering? And one of the reasons for that has to be in the suffering I know, I know in my heart, I know in my head, I know with every fibre of my being that God walks with us in the suffering.

And there’s nothing more real, is there, than talking to people about your own experience of who God has been in your life, and who He is throughout time and eternity. God spoke to me as a child when I was in despair, and he’s speaking now through this message to you, perhaps, through the words in the Bible that we read and meditate on.

Lord God. I thank you that you have given us reason for hope. Please help us to remain humble and gentle and respectful when we share that hope with others who have no hope. Amen.
