Let’s meditate on what Paul says in Colossians 3 verse 12. Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

What is it that the world calls us to be, to look like? We are encouraged to be bold, to be strong, to be fearless. We’re encouraged to stand on our rights. And how different is the call of God in the Bible? To be compassionate, to be meek, to be humble, to be kind.

And Paul says, put these things on. Wear them as clothes so that every single day your compassion, your kindness is seen, your patience affects everything that you do and all those you come in contact with.

How do we do this? You know, I asked God to give me compassion, having felt that I was not a particularly compassionate person. And I think that God’s answer to prayer has been to take me into situations where my heart is broken. To operate within this world in the way that Jesus operated, to follow His example, we must put on, we must clothe ourselves with compassion.

Forget what the world says we need to be. The only thing we need to be is like Jesus, who came meekly and mildly, who came with humility. Who stood against injustice, yes, but who was kind to all and who accepted those who society had rejected.

Lord God, please help us to grow in compassion. Please help us to grow in kindness and humility and meekness. God, We know that we are chosen by you and we thank you for choosing us. And in return, the little return we can make, we want to be more like Jesus and to follow your way. Amen.
