What do you make of Proverbs 17 verse 6? Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.

Now we often see in Proverbs the most extreme examples in order to make the point. So the writer of Proverbs is not saying that all families are fully functional. In fact, what family is fully functional?

But the proverb also tells us that the way God intends family relationships to work is that grandchildren will be a blessing. They will be a celebration of their forebears, and that in the opposite direction, fathers, parents of children will be a credit to their children.

In right relationship, with God fully involved in every part of every family, with humility and love at the centre of all that we do in all our interactions, this is how God sees relationships. With parents being celebrated by their children and with grandchildren being an adornment of families. We don’t know exactly how things will look in heaven, but I do see that there will be majesty and glory and God’s glory reflected in the wonderful restored relationships between all generations.

This gives us something to aspire to, doesn’t it, in our family relationships. God is a God of restoration. God is a God of love. God is a God of justice also. And he wants to be the centre of our families.

Lord God, thank you for the families you’ve given us. For better or worse, you work in all circumstances for the good of those who love you and who are called by you. And we want to be part of that. We want to be part of the family that you are growing and part of your kingdom. Amen.
