There’s beautiful symmetry in the passage that we’re meditating on today. Romans 5 verse 19. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

Paul of course here is talking about Adam, on the one hand, and Jesus on the other. Adam, our progenitor, the one who was disobedient, and the one who leads us into sin, versus Christ, the new Adam, the one who was obedient all the way to dying on the cross, who leads us into righteousness. And you can’t escape this logic.

We follow one or the other. We have no choice about that. Because our father, Adam, he went before us, he sinned with Eve, and he led the entire human race into the consequences of that sin. He goes before us, and we follow, because he was first and we come after.

But we have this option that we can choose no longer to follow Adam. We can choose instead to become obedient to God, to choose Christ, to repent of our sin, and to follow Him. And then Christ leads us, through His obedience, into righteousness.

This is an incredible balance. Casting off sin. And choosing life and righteousness, having that option is amazing because we don’t deserve it. We just deserve, because of our sin, we deserve death.

And so, meditating on this passage, let’s again lay down and turn away from the sin, turn away from the path that Adam set for us, and turn once more, repent, choose to go in the direction that Christ set, of self denial, of grace, of truth, of love. Of eternal life.
