Today, we’re going to meditate on a familiar passage from Genesis 3, right at the start. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, And that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit, and ate, and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

What leaps out at me here in this passage is that Adam and Eve, they saw That the fruit was desirable because it made them wise. It was also beautiful to behold. And so often, I’m like that. I think I know best, based on what I perceive with my senses. We’re very prone to that, aren’t we humans? We think that our minds can work things out flawlessly.

And this was the approach of the man and woman back in the Garden of Eden. They thought that they knew best. They were persuaded by what the serpent had to say to them. And they thought, this is the best course of action for us; we’ll be wise, plus we get to consume this delicious looking fruit. It’s all good!

And they couldn’t have been more wrong. I mean, God had already told them not to do it, and it should have been enough for them and for us to trust God and take him at his word, because he doesn’t reveal everything to us, because our little minds can’t cope.

But it wasn’t enough. And they thought they knew better. And so we’ve been plunged headlong into the mess that is going on on planet Earth. All forms of evil practice that take place here because we think we know best. We don’t.

God, you are the only one who is truly wise, and we submit to you. We submit to your commandments, and especially when we think we know better than you. We will bow the knee to you, our God. Amen.
