In Matthew chapter seven, verse 12, we see one of the expressions of the Golden Rule. Jesus is talking and he says, "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them. For this is the Law and the Prophets."

He’s saying that we should treat others the way we would want to be treated. And sometimes it’s hard for us to look at that objectively and really to understand how we want to be treated.

Can we go through every single action in our lives towards another person and say, that’s what I would have wanted them to do to us. When we hold unforgiveness against somebody, can we truly say, we would want people to hold unforgiveness against us.

And Jesus says that doing this, that treating people the way we want to be treated, that is in a good way – and it’s a good way of evaluating how you treat people, isn’t it, because we would want good things to happen to us – so therefore we do good things to other people. But it’s interesting that Jesus says, this is the Law and the Prophets. This fulfils, this way of operating towards our fellow human beings, this is what the Law of God is all about.

The bottom line is that this is an expression of love, isn’t it? An expression of love and justice, but an expression of mercy too. So we are to love all of those around us because in doing so we are operating in obedience to God and we are giving Him pleasure.

This isn’t necessarily an easy way to behave when the anger rises. But God, we ask you to help us to treat others lovingly. To behave towards them the way we would want them to behave towards us. We can only do this in your strength. Amen.
