James chapter 4 verse 10 says: Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you. What does that mean for us?

Do we know that God wants us to be his children, not his slaves, not even his servants? He wants us to be his children. He wants us to be brothers and sisters of Jesus.

But all children need to understand their place. They can’t usurp their parents. They can’t be the ones in charge. That isn’t how things work, and we know that.

So in order for God to exalt us, first, we have to understand that we are His creatures. We are His children. We are not in charge. We don’t know everything. We have to recognize and submit to and understand His authority.

But when we do, oh, glorious. He exalts us. He lifts us up.

He says, My child, my son, my daughter, come to me. Come and sit with me. I want to make you mine."

If we humble ourselves, God indeed does lift us up.

Lord, we bow to you today. We acknowledge who you are. We love you. We honor you. We obey you. Thank you, God, for your care of us. Amen.
