James chapter 1 verse 5 has a lovely promise: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all, without reproach, and it will be given him.
Do you feel lacking in wisdom? I mean, I certainly do, many times. But James is very, very clear here. If you lack wisdom, all you need to do is ask God, and God is waiting to answer that prayer.
Not just a little bit, but generously. God wants to give us wisdom.
But there might be a slight catch, I think. Because one of the ways that God gives us wisdom is by letting us go through circumstances that allow us to grow wisdom. So watch out for that. If in your prayer to God you ask him for wisdom, watch out, because sooner or later, you are going to run into some kind of set of circumstances that allow you to learn.
And unfortunately, if you’re anything like me, one of the ways you might learn is through failure. Through getting things wrong. And then the next time we encounter a similar situation, we are then gifted the wisdom that God has given us. He’s allowed to grow in us.
But also, one of the ways that God allows us to grow in wisdom is by giving us the Holy Spirit who speaks into our minds and hearts. And that for sure is a less painful way of acquiring wisdom.
But God is God, and he will answer that prayer in the way of his choosing. We just need to submit.
Thank you God for your generosity to us. Thank you that you have vast stores of wisdom that you are more than willing to share with your children. Amen.
