Let’s meditate on John 14 verse 21. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me and he who loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
How do we know that we love God? We show our love by obeying him. Not obeying him in a legalistic sense, but obeying him as children who want to please their Father. So how do we please our Father? We find out what he likes. We get to know him. We get to know his character. We understand him.
He’s revealed himself to us in multiple ways. Through the Bible. Through creation. Through his Son and through the revelation of the Holy Spirit. And by getting to know God, getting to know what he values and appreciates and wants, we can obey him. We can show our love for him.
And this saying of Jesus comes with a promise. He who loves me will be loved by my Father. We who love Jesus, we receive God’s love in return and jesus shows himself to us. Jesus is real for us and active in our lives. Are we obedient? This is food for thought.
Heavenly Father, please help us to be obedient to you. Lord, to seek and know what it is that you want from us, to give of ourselves, and to place you first. Thank you for your love. Amen.
