Let’s meditate today on 1 John chapter 4 verse 1. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

It’s hard to believe that this was written 2,000 years ago. Test every spirit to see whether they’re from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. How relevant is that today?

It’s so easy to browse YouTube and see 20 false prophecies before breakfast. The Apostle John is reminding us to be wise about who we listen to, what we take in, what we accept as truth. We must test everything. We must measure everything against scripture, against the straight line, the true north compass that we are given in the Bible.

We are to be innocent as doves, yes, but wary as serpents. Don’t be taken in. Let’s not be taken in by speech that merely sounds good. By guidance that just makes sense to us. Let us pay attention to the things that line up with what God says is true and real.

Father God. I ask you for wisdom. Knowing that you are kind and generous in giving that. Wisdom for my friends who are watching and listening, that we will have discernment, that we will know truth, that we will not be taken in by false prophecies, by the lies and propaganda spread by people in your name. God, help us to listen to you, to your Spirit, and to pay attention to your truth. Amen.
