They say that ignorance of the law is no defense, and that includes ignorance of God’s moral law. Today we’re meditating on Acts chapter 17, verse 30. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
And if you look further into this chapter, you’ll see that Luke mentions that judgment is coming. But up until this point, prior to the full revelation of Jesus Christ, in whom we put our trust, God overlooked people’s ignorance.
In other words, he didn’t fully wipe out all humankind because of their sin. But now that Jesus has come and he has revealed to us, and the message of the gospel is going out everywhere, this is the call of God to everyone to repent. Because he says he’s not going to withhold judgment forever. Ultimately, judgment will be coming, so please repent first. Please let’s be in a right relationship with God before that happens.
God is doing his level best, which is pretty good, to make sure that we have a way to be right and clean with him. And so we as Christians, we are part of God’s mission to ensure that everybody everywhere repents because he chooses to use us to spread the gospel throughout the nations.
Lord God, I thank you that you are slow to anger and rich in love. I thank you that you have to such a great extent overlooked our sin. You have postponed your wrath. You have postponed your judgment.
Lord God may your message of peace and reconciliation go throughout all nations so that every man, woman, and child has an opportunity to put their trust in Jesus Christ, to repent and to be in a right relationship with their Creator. Amen.
