Would you like to walk in the blessing of God? I certainly would! And the Bible is full of practical advice for how we can do things like this. Today we meditate on Psalm chapter one, verse one. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked. Nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.

You may know that this Psalm goes on to say that his delight is in the law of the Lord. So that’s a positive thing that we can do. But today we’re meditating on some of the negative things that we avoid.

We aren’t going to walk in the counsel of the wicked. We have to be wise about who we listen to.

Lots of people think that they have good insight into the way that life should work. But if they are not following scripture, if they are not listening to the Holy Spirit, then their good intentions may lead us astray. And that’s not to mention those who are in fact fully evil in their hearts and looking to lead us astray.

We don’t listen to them. We are looking to listen to the counsel of those who have an honourable walk with God, who value scripture, who listen to the Holy Spirit. And they are going to lead us in better paths.

We don’t stand in the way of sinners. We are not arrogantly presuming that we are right about things. That we come to God, that we live our lives full of humility.

We assume that God always knows better than us because he does. We just don’t have his perspective. We don’t have his vast wisdom that spans millennia and beyond.

We don’t sit in the seat of scoffers. We don’t take opportunities to pull people down. We don’t look at those around us and say they’re rubbish. Why would we do that? We are the ones bringing peace and love to this world. We are the ones through whom God pours out his grace. My friends. I commend this verse to you and I recommend further meditation on it. How would the Holy Spirit guide you to avoid evil counsel and arrogance and mocking?
