Today’s meditation verse is beautiful, and it’s so beautiful that it’s been made and incorporated into many songs. It also tells us about a beautiful state of being. Let’s read it now. Psalm chapter 84, verse 10. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

This psalm comes during a time where there is a temple, where people are going as part of their worship to a specific building, and that is the place that they call the House of God. And it’s different for us. In the light of what Jesus has done for us, we have access to God without needing to go through a temple.

But we can still apply this thinking, can’t we to our lives and to especially our faith. A day in God’s courts, a day serving God, a day in which we are living his way is better than a thousand without that. I would rather be in a lowly position in the house of God, not fully achieving everything that anybody might achieve, but just being able to be there near him than to dwell in tents of wickedness.

Can we say this about ourselves that actually it’s more important to us to be seeking God, to be pursuing him than anything else in our lives. That’s really challenging, isn’t it? I certainly don’t always live that way.

So how do we access the sentiment in this psalm? I think we have to get to know God better because as we get to know him better, we can easily love him more because we see how beautiful, how kind and loving and how just he is, and how all his aspects are perfect.

And there are two key ways that we can do that. The first is by reading his word and nurturing it in our lives, and the second is by looking to the Holy Spirit for his revelation, his active application of the word of God into our lives.

This truth can live in our hearts, my friends. I believe it. But we have to press in, don’t we?
