I want us to grasp something truly beautiful that we see in this verse as we meditate on John chapter 17, verse 20. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.
So this is in the middle of Jesus’s high priestly prayer. He’s praying for things for his disciples, but then he says, I’m not just asking, God, for these things for my disciples, but I’m also asking for the same things for those who are going to believe in the word spread through my disciples. He’s talking about us, friends.
And why is that special? Well, let me see whose prayer is absolutely guaranteed to be answered? Isn’t it the prayer of the son of God, who knows the mind of God because he is God?
So Jesus praying this blessing over his disciples and over us is absolutely guaranteed to have that request granted. Jesus, the son of God, prayed for us at that moment in time, and his prayer is powerful enough to penetrate through all of time.
He prayed for us, my friends, he loves us. He was thinking of us. And we can be certain that God will act on that prayer, is acting on that prayer.
If you’d like to know more about what it was that Jesus actually prayed, then look around this verse. Look at John chapter 17, and you’ll see the whole prayer. It is beautiful.
If you are feeling forgotten, or lost, or betrayed, remember this, Jesus doesn’t consider you lost. He doesn’t consider you betrayed. He considers you his most beloved child, his most beloved brother or sister.
If you are believing in Jesus through the word that was spoken all those thousands of years ago, you are covered by the prayer of the Most Righteous One. That’s amazing.
