Have you ever wondered if God hears your prayers? Well, let’s settle this once and for all as we meditate today on one Peter chapter three, verse 12. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
Peter makes this clear contrast between those who are righteous and redeemed, in other words, those who are in Christ, and those who aren’t, those who do evil. God isn’t listening to those prayers. I mean, if an evildoer says, “God, please help me with this”, God’s not even listening to that. His face is set against them.
So that just then leaves us. We are righteous if we are redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. If we’ve accepted him, repented and chosen him as our Saviour, we are righteous. So that means Peter says, God is listening to you. His ears are open to your prayers. There is nothing that you say to God that he won’t hear. You can be absolutely certain that he is listening.
Now, the question of whether and how God answers our prayers, that’s a different one. Often it feels like God isn’t answering our prayers, but he always is. He’s always communicating in one way or another. We don’t always hear him.
Often the answer, as we know, is “not now”. Often the answer is “no, that wouldn’t be good for you”. And often the answer is “yes”, but not quite in the way that we expect it. Because God is unlimited in the things that he can do. He has such a vast perspective on all the things that are going on in his universe all the time that he sets a course that is wiser than any course we could ever set.
My friend, if you are righteous, if you are in Jesus Christ, God is listening. Keep praying. He likes it when we talk to him and be assured that he is listening to you.
