Parenthood is a complicated thing and there are many poor experiences of parents or of being parents. Today’s meditation verse, though gives us something to aspire to in well-functioning parental relationships, whether they are biological, adoptive, or spiritual. Proverbs 23 verse 15. My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.

This in a great functioning relationship is a way for a parent to be gladdened, to see their children or their spiritual children operating in a way that’s wise. Not to see them making foolish choices, not to see them fouling up their lives.

Do we want to be a credit to our parents if we have good parents? Then seek wisdom.

You know, in James it says, God gives wisdom to anybody that seeks it, generously without finding fault. Wisdom plays out in many ways and often what the world thinks is wisdom is not what God says is wisdom. Often what God shows to us seems like foolishness to the world. Nevertheless, it’s his wisdom that we should seek. And then a true parent will be glad because they see us operating in that wisdom.

How do we reach for wisdom then? And how do we teach wisdom? You know, I’m gonna say this because I so often do. We go to the Bible first, don’t we? It is the ultimate for us, printed or audible source of wisdom that we can mine for our entire lives.

This is not a brag. I have read the Bible many times, cover to cover, and still I find things that I don’t know, that I haven’t learned. And that’s gonna be true for my whole life because God’s wisdom is infinite and unending, and my wisdom is mediocre and non-existent.

If we push into God, if we press into learning all that he has for us to learn, we can become wise as God defines wisdom and we can make our parents glad.
