My friends, should God-fearing Christians be involved with or concerned about social justice? Well, let’s turn to God’s word and meditate on Proverbs Chapter 31 verse nine. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Are we going to say that this verse doesn’t apply to us? I don’t think we can. It’s fairly clear that this is consistent with the whole theme of scripture. In particular, concerned with the poor and the defenseless and the needy.
So the writer of Proverbs is saying, we need to take action, don’t we? We need to open our mouth. We need to speak for those who aren’t able to speak. Are we defending others? Are we standing up for those who, for whatever reason are ill-equipped to fight their own battles?
Do we judge righteously or do we show preference to those other people who don’t necessarily deserve it? Are we defending the rights of the poor because there’s a lot of things in this world, a lot of principles and powers that are hostile to those who are poor.
You know, we say the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer. And often that’s what we see because society, government contains humans and humans are all flawed.
Nevertheless, as between us and God, we have a duty here, don’t we? For us to be willing to take this action to speak, to stand up, to defend rights. Are we defending rights my friends? Have you identified who around you is poor and needy? Because really this needs to start in our immediate communities.
This is the challenge of this verse. Find out who’s poor and needy near you, and then you do your bit to defend their rights, to open your mouth on behalf of them.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is an active gospel, and being part of it is a precious and awesome responsibility.
