It’s a bit shocking that we live in a world where God’s name is taken in vain all the time, and not only by people who don’t worship God. The Christians do it too! Let’s meditate today on Exodus 20, verse seven. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God in vain. For the Lord will not hold him guiltless, who takes his name in vain.
And I don’t want, as we meditate on this to get too hung up on which particular word or name we’re using for God. We might call him Yahweh. We might call him Father. We might just call him God with a capital G. Whatever it is, if we are speaking flippantly about that person, the most majestic and glorious person who exists, this is an offense to God.
And it slips so easily into speech, doesn’t it? Because there is a great prevalence of this kind of, let’s call it blasphemy, because that’s what it is, in our society. You know what the initials OMG stand for, whether or not you say the full words. Are we saying that, is that in our vocabulary? It shouldn’t be. We shouldn’t do anything that represents God in a bad light.
We shouldn’t swear we’ll do anything when we don’t really mean it, invoking God as we swear. We shouldn’t do anything that brings the name of God into disrepute. And that includes behaving in a way that is not like Jesus would behave.
God’s name is holy because a name represents a person and whatever we call God, that is representative of him. We should speak his name with reverence, respect, and awe at all times. This is a commandment that challenges us to be more mindful in how we speak about our God.
