It sometimes feels like David, as the Psalmist has been reading our newspapers, watching our news, looking at our social media. He has insight into what things were going to be like for us right now. Listen to this: Psalm 133 verse one. A song of ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity.
We need to hear this, don’t we? Right now, how often are brothers and sisters in Christ in disunity? How often are we tearing each other down? How often are we fighting against each other doctrinally?
Now I accept that the Bible has to be interpreted, and sometimes we come up with differing interpretations. But does that mean that we can’t be in unity? If he’s a cessationist and she’s a continuationist, does that mean that they can’t meet together as brothers and sisters in the Lord?
David says it’s good and pleasant when we are in unity. This is something to aspire to. How do we aspire to that then?
First of all, we look at what unites us clearly: The person and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Secondly, we look at what that means, that activity: God coming down as Jesus sacrificing his life and taking on the burden of sin.
Because sin my friends, is something that divides and separates us. If one party is sinning that sin must be dealt with. And sometimes God calls other brethren to address that sin when it’s unaddressed. But if we remove sin by living holy lives in step with the Holy Spirit, then this is another way in which we tend to towards unity.
Unity comes too when we worship together, when we live in fellowship with one another, when we sit under the word of God together, when we do these things that are part of our Christian life and duty and pleasure and privilege.
We must be committed to expelling sin. We also must be committed to love for one another. And if that is the abiding principle, then we can deal with all other things together as brothers and sisters in the Lord. How good and that would be.
