Ah, the Sabbath? What should we do about the Sabbath? Should it be Saturday? Should it be Sunday? Should it be all days? Should it be no day? Let’s think about this as we meditate on Exodus chapter 20, verse eight in our mini series on the 10 Commandments. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
Now, the principle of Sabbath is stretched right through the Bible, isn’t it? from the first book Genesis, where God rests after making everything, to Jesus’s fulfillment, being Lord of the Sabbath, who becomes our rest.
So this Sabbath principle is really important to God, isn’t it? It’s important to him for us. He wants us to keep our rest holy. In fact, he wants every part of our lives to be holy. He says, be holy for I am holy.
But he particularly wants rest for us, and rest is a really deep thing. This is not just physical rest from our labours. This is resting in God so that he can refresh us in all ways it’s possible to be refreshed, but particularly spiritually.
The rest that our God gives us is rest from anxiety, particularly anxiety about our future. .Because as we rest in him, we remember that he has secured our future permanently, for always, eternally.
And so does this mean that we need to follow a specific set of rules and regulations for one day of the week? I don’t think so. Because Jesus Christ has fulfilled the law, the requirements of the law on our behalf.
But I do think that this Sabbath day remains important, and this is one of the reasons why we Christians worship God on Sunday. We make that day in a particular way, holy, where we gather together to revere God’s name. And that is a good thing.
So meditating on this verse, how my friends will you remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy?
