As the new year begins, it is excellent for us to ensure that we are focusing on the right things, the things that really matter. And so we do this today by meditating on two Corinthians chapter four, verse 18. As we look not to the things that are seen, but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Paul is reminding us that not everything that we can see is all that there is. There are things in the spiritual realm of which our five senses cannot perceive. Paul reminds us to take into account those things that we cannot see, hear, taste, touch, or smell.
The things of eternity, the things of God, the Kingdom of God, advances in a way that we cannot see. Because it is the advance of God’s reign and rule in the hearts of the people who love him, who turn towards him.
And so this is not the case that the physical things are unimportant. No, it’s simply that they are not our basis for our existence. Materialism will save nobody. Trusting in the son of God, that is what will save us.
And so as we move into a new year, let us determine that that’s what we’ll do. We will trust in Jesus, we will look to him. We will ask the Holy Spirit to guide us through another year. And we will be people that are storing up treasures in heaven rather than treasures on Earth.
May I wish you a blessed year as you walk hand in hand with your Saviour.
