Do you want to be rich? Lots of preachers today seem to think it’s okay to preach that wanting to be rich is okay. And they want to be rich themselves. But I think these people must be reading a different Bible to the one that I’m reading. ’cause today we’re looking at one Timothy six, verse nine, which says this: But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
Have you heard this verse before? Check your Bible. It’s in there. How is it possible that the Prosperity Gospel can be telling so many people that wanting to be materially wealthy is a good thing.
There’s a stark warning here that this desire to be rich comes with many, many dangers. We fall into temptation. We fall into all sorts of traps. We’re led away by these desires that take us away from the kingdom of God and from what he wants for us.
They lead people into ruin and destruction. How many people have made themselves poor giving money away, sowing a seed when all that’s done is make a preacher of a false gospel wealthy at their expense.
Please my friends, don’t be taken in by this. Listen to and read the word of God that warns us about these things. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have our needs met. In fact, God will supply our needs. But when we seek all these other things without seeking God, we’re just making idols.
And God will not share His glory with any other thing. He will not allow idols in our lives. He knows that they’re bad for us. He knows that they will plunge us into ruin and destruction.
Do you feel like you’d like to be wealthy? Well be warned. There are great risks allowing that desire to blossom in your heart.
Instead, store up treasure in heaven where no ruin can befall that treasure. Seek spiritual treasure, my friends. Maybe God will make you rich. Maybe he won’t. If we are living for him though, first and foremost, either way, rich or poor, it will be okay.
