It’s quite easy to live in fear, isn’t it so that it dominates our decision making. But this isn’t what God wants for us. Let’s meditate today on two Timothy chapter one, verse seven. For God gave us a spirit, not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.
Paul is encouraging his protege here, Timothy, in what he can expect from the Holy Spirit that he’s received. The Holy Spirit that God has placed into us does not give us fear. It may help us to be an awe of God, to have the reverence fear, but not terror fear, in life. We don’t need to be terrified as we go about our business, primarily because our eternal destiny is secure.
And Paul goes further than that. He says, not only is the Spirit in you not fearful, it’s powerful. And it’s loving. And it’s self-controlled. And these are part of the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives, that we are growing in the manifestation of his power within us.
The Fruit of his Spirit is growing. We are growing in love, and we are self-controlled people. We are not frivolous. We’re not subject to whims and flights of fancy.
No. We operate consciously on the basis of what God wants from us in our lives. We see that he’s directing our steps and so we choose to place our feet on the path that he’s given us.
My friends, if we grasp hold of this verse and take it in, how radically different can our lives be. If we’re operating not out of fear, but in the power of the Holy Spirit with love and self-control.
This is worth dwelling on, isn’t it? And this is one of the reasons why we meditate.
