At advent, we can reflect on many of the characteristics of the Messiah, and one of those is how he came to be our Shepherd. So let’s do that by meditating today on Psalm chapter 23 verse one: A Psalm of David. The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want.
Let’s not get confused by that word “want” at the end of the verse. It doesn’t mean that God will give us everything that we want. No, it means that we shan’t be in want. He will supply to us the things that we need. But this is based on his divine perspective and his intimate knowledge of who we are, how we’re made, and his purposes for our life.
So our needs will be met by our Shepherd. This Shepherd who came to earth as a baby and lived as a man and showed his disciples what shepherding truly was, as he led those people into closer relationship with God, better knowledge of who he was. And who met their spiritual needs and ensured that the lost the, broken were cared for.
This is the truest shepherd of all. He leads us. He guides us. He seeks the lost sheep . And he makes sure that we are led into sweet pasture, where we are nourished, where we are prepared for life, where we are prepared for the next life, where we’re shown how to worship our Creator, where we learn what our true purpose is, where we come to an understanding of who he is and who we are.
So this verse is really encouraging. It’s sweet, isn’t it? It’s something to savour as we head towards Christmas, the celebration of the birth of our Saviour. The Lord our God is our Shepherd and we shall not be in want.
Thank you, God, for the truth and encouragement of this verse today. Thank you that you are so interested in us. You came down to be with us, to save us and protect us. We owe you everything. Amen.
