God seeks true believers and he invites us to be part of that process of making true believers. Today’s meditation passage is Matthew 28, verses 18 to 20. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I’m with you always to the end of the age.”
This is the mission that God gave to his disciples. And by implication, it’s a mission for us too. All Christians are joined together in this one mission to spread God’s kingdom. By making disciples. Not by just telling people about Jesus, but by inviting them to share in all that means, in the growth of the knowledge of God, in the increase of his character through the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
And so we baptise people into this Trinitarian framework, the complete and cohesive, comprehensive view of the true and living God, teaching people to do what Jesus has commanded. We don’t live by law, but we still have a Father to learn to love and to learn to obey. And part of that process is that we will have to learn. We learn what pleases God.
Do you know one of the things that really pleases God? It’s when we do the very thing that he made us to do. And what you were made to do my friend, is different from what I was made to do.
In fact, one of the things I was made to do was to write computer programs. And when I do that, that gives God pleasure. So let us do what God has made us to do and teach others to do the same.
And then Jesus ends this dialogue with a warm and comforting promise: “And behold, I’m with you always to the end of the age.” That is something we really need to hear.
