Proverbs 12 verse one. Whoever loves discipline, loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Yes, it actually says ‘stupid’, and it says that in a few translations. The KJV says ‘brutish’.
So the writer of the Proverbs is being pretty clear here about those of us who refuse to be corrected. That’s stupid. It’s ridiculous. It harms ourselves. In fact, good discipline, good training, good bringing up in the knowledge of what is good and what’s bad, this is so good for us that it’s very, very foolish for us to ignore it or to push it away.
In fact, the writer of Proverbs says that we should desire this. We should love it. We should love being disciplined. That’s quite counterintuitive, isn’t it? We associate discipline primarily with punishment. But the discipline of God is intended to bring us up into mature adulthood as his beloved children.
