There’s a bit of a strange idea going around. You may have heard of it. The idea that Jesus going to the cross was an act of cosmic child abuse on God’s part, but this is plainly wrong. In John chapter 10 verses 17 to 18, Jesus talks about how he comes to lay down his life of his own accord. No one can take his life from him.
He lays it down by his own free choice. He has the authority to lay down his life. Jesus is very clear that he’s doing this because he wants to. And because of its extreme love for us, why wouldn’t he want to? He says, greater love has no man than this than he laid down his life for his friends. It’s very clear that Jesus knew absolutely what he was doing for us when he went to the cross, and he did it because he wanted to, because of how much he loves us.
