Today is gonna be as much a testimony as a meditation, and I hope it encourages you as much as God has encouraged me. We’re looking at Psalm 23 verse four. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You may have gone through the valley of the shadow of death, like I have. For my wife and I, this was particularly true last year in the closing weeks of our 19-year-old son’s life.

We knew he was going to go and be with Jesus. But it was a traumatic ending. It was definitely a valley with the shadow of death in it.

And so as parents and as people who loved Morgan, we grieved throughout and afterwards. But we knew, we knew beyond a shadow of doubt that there was no evil to fear in this situation because of the certainty of the hope of resurrection, because of the fact that we would see our formerly disabled son in heaven completely whole one day when we go to be with him and to be with Jesus.

The rod and the staff that comfort us these are the discipline, the correction, and the guiding love of our God, which has been true throughout our lives, my wife and I since we made our commitments to walk with him.

And I hope that’s true for you too, my friend, that you have made that commitment to walk with Jesus. Because then you can say, when you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you need fear no evil, because God remains with us at all times, whether we feel him or not.

The sadness, the grief is real. We would never deny that. But we are full of hope, because we have a precious Saviour who gave his life for us so that death would have no permanent claim over us or over our son Morgan.

I thank you, God that you do walk with us. You don’t leave us alone in the valley of the shadow of death. Thank you that we need fear no evil. Thank you that in all your ways you lead us and you comfort us. Amen.
