If we dare to talk about the roles of men and women and their relationships, we wander into controversial territory, don’t we? But I will not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I will not be ashamed of the Good News that’s in the Bible. So let us today meditate on Genesis chapter two, verse 18. Then the Lord God said it is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helper fit for him.

For me, this is just such a precious verse in the Bible, it tells me that the relationship between men and women was ordained by God specifically, so that there could be that relationship of help, of service, of mutual service. The helper fit for him: that means the right person for each other, there’s a good fit.

And God says that it isn’t good for the man to be on his own. And I think anybody who has suffered loneliness can agree with that. We don’t all have the privilege of walking in a relationship with a spouse, but nevertheless, God has sent us many people on this earth so that we can be in relationship with others so that we are not alone. And we don’t necessarily need to be married to one another in order to be helpers for each other.

But this is a very special relationship that God’s talking about. He has designed this relationship between Adam and Eve, and this is replicated throughout the generations. There is something uniquely beautiful and right about the God ordained relationship of marriage.

And this is one of the reasons why marriage is often used as the symbol of the relationship between Jesus and his church. It is sacred, it is divine, it is blessed.

Thank you God, that you made us such that we could have these wonderful relationships.

Thank you that you saw our need and that you met it. For those of my friends who are not in a relationship like this and would like to be, God, I know that you will supply every need according to your riches in glory. Please bring comfort and support to my friend now. Amen.
