The writer of the Proverbs has some advice to his son and to us, and it touches on consistency. And it’s quite important. Let’s meditate on Proverbs chapter three, verse three. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.
The writer says be consistent in particular with love and in your human relationships. The love that we have, the godly love, the agape love for those around us should be consistent, steadfast, always on. There should never be a moment when we are not loving those around us.
And this is nothing to do with feelings. This is to do with the attitude of our heart and the decisions that we’re making. This faithfulness should never be far from us.
The verse says, bind this around your neck, this steadfast love and faithfulness. Wear it like a necklace so that you never forget it, so that it’s never far from you. Write it on the tablet of your heart. Indelibly etch this into your very being. That’s what the heart means in this medieval literature. You should through and through be steadfastly loving and faithful.
This is a stretch goal, isn’t it? It’s hard for us. We are often faithless and unloving. But when we look at what Jesus did and the love that he poured out for the unlovely, including us who didn’t deserve it, that is inspiring.
But inspiration is not enough because still in our own strength we can’t do this. We cannot be steadfastly, continually loving and faithful. We absolutely have to press into and lean on God’s strength, the strength that he gives us for this task.
So let us take this verse to heart and ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with that love and that faithfulness, both of which are characteristics of his Fruit that he’s growing in us, so that we can be fruitful for the Kingdom of God.
