If we would like mental, emotional, spiritual stability, then the word of God has given us a clear guide on how to achieve that. Listen to what the Psalmist says in chapter 16, verse eight of the Psalms. I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand I shall not be shaken.
The Psalmist here, king David, is clear that the way to stability is to make sure that you are walking right with God. For David, that means holding an image in his mind of God at all times. Thinking on the things of God, thinking about the law of God, which is another way of saying his word, his scripture. Making sure that that is always in front and the beacon to which we are pointing. So that God is before us and we are aiming at the things of God.
If we fill our minds and our hearts with the things of God, then this will stand us in good stead for interacting with the world. This doesn’t mean we become over spiritual and no use to the people in this world – no quite the contrary. All you need to do is to read the Bible to see that God is extremely practical and interested in the lives of all his creatures.
So we hold onto his word. We keep him in mind. We ensure that the thoughts that we are thinking are the thoughts he wants us to think, and thus we are not shaken. Thus we do not stumble on the course that God has set out for us.
This is probably easier said than done, isn’t it? But this isn’t something we have to do in our own strength. We are helped in this by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit himself helps us to walk in step with him. So let’s pray on that basis.
Holy Spirit, please help us to keep in our mind and in our hearts all that God has for us and wants of us. Let us remember the cross. Let us remember our Saviour and the example that he set. Thank you that in so doing and with your help, we will not be shaken. We will always be standing on solid ground, that Rock of our faith. Amen.
