Do you ever say to God, God, what is it that you want me to do? Well, today we have at least a partial answer to that question. It’s Isaiah chapter one, verse 17. Learn to do good. Seek justice. Correct oppression. Bring justice to the fatherless. Plead the widow’s cause.

This is an early manifesto, isn’t it for the holy life that we are to lead, starting with learning to do good. There’s much instruction in the Bible isn’t there about what God wants, what is good and what is evil. We can learn from that. We can learn from those who’ve taught us before, whether that be our parents, our spiritual leaders, or the vast cloud of witnesses who have lived holy lives before us.

And as we learn to do good, from that position, we seek justice. We want justice to prevail. Injustice is something that God can’t tolerate. He doesn’t like dishonest scales. He doesn’t like people being ripped off. Correct oppression, he says.

If you see someone being oppressed, be that at school in the workplace, in voluntary work in the church, you can correct that. You can stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves, bringing justice to the fatherless, pleading the widow’s cause. These are symbolic of people who are vulnerable, without a protector. But they do have a protector, don’t they? It’s us. This is the mandate given to us by scripture.

How this plays out in our lives will look different for every person. And so I suggest you spend some time talking to God about this verse and asking, Lord, what does this mean for me specifically? How would you have me seek justice and correct oppression?
