It can be pretty painful and uncomfortable, can’t it, when God puts us under his discipline. And if that’s the position in which you find yourself, I want you to take comfort from today’s passage. We are meditating on Proverbs chapter three, verses 11 to 12. My son do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves as a father, the son in whom he delights.

The writer of the proverb is saying that the main reason that God is even disciplining us is because he loves us. He’s interested in us. He cares about our growth and development. He wants us to be conformed into the likeness of the perfect Jesus Christ.

And because of this, he’s not indifferent. He won’t leave us as we are. He will change us. He puts his Holy Spirit in us to grow his Fruit. He allows the circumstances of life to challenge and change us.

The writer of this proverb says, don’t pull away from that. Don’t avoid it. Embrace it. Don’t let this discipline wear you down. Be encouraged because this genuinely is for your good.

It is because God is a loving Father that he wishes to lead us through discipline, both painful and not so painful. And in this way, and sometimes through suffering, he allows us to grow more and more like Jesus.

So if that’s the place in which you find yourself today, please take heart. It is a sign of God’s love for you. And when we look back on this life and all that we’ve been through and we see God’s hand at work in our lives, we will be so grateful for all that he has done for us.

Heaven truly will be a place of great rejoicing.
