Pride is pretty deadly for Christians, but that doesn’t mean that we have to fade into the background all the time. In fact, Jesus told us that we were to shine. Let’s listen to what he says in Matthew chapter five, verse 16. In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Jesus actually wants our good works to be seen. Now, sometimes we might think that we’re supposed to do everything in secret, like our giving should be done in secret. Our prayer sometimes needs to be done in secrets. But the work that we do for our communities, for our friends, for our fellowships that has to necessarily be done in public, a lot of it.
But not so that we are full of pride, not so that the credit goes to us. No in fact, the very reason that we can do any good works at all is that God himself gave us skills, gave us life, gave us breath. He empowers us, so the glory goes to him.
And if we do all things in the name of Jesus providing we are not bringing his name into disrepute, then Jesus gets the glory. God gets the glory. And this is good because make no doubt about it, friends, we are all on a mission. Your life is a mission. Your mission may be different from mine, but we’re all on a mission from God.
And part of that mission is to do good. Not to earn brownie points, not to score credit in heaven. That’s not our motivation. Our motivation is so that God, our Father, who has blessed us so much, will be praised and glorified, and so that more people can come into a personal relationship with Jesus.
Isn’t that a good reason to get out of bed in the morning?
