Light is clearly a good thing. We need light to be able to see. We need light to avoid stumbling. But here it’s a metaphor for goodness, for purity. And the fact that God is light without any darkness tells us that he’s pure. He is one thing only in the sense of morality. He is only good. He is never evil.
And this gives us great confidence and reassurance. We know that we don’t have a capricious God who one day will be kind to us and the next day is trying to trip us up or wound us.
We live in a world where we see much evil, and this evil comes from absence of good. It comes from excluding God from our kingdom. It comes from excluding God from creation by saying to him with Adam, we don’t want you. We want to go our way.
And one of our jobs then as Christians, as witnesses to this world, is to bring the light of God and to shine that light into the world, into our communities, especially places that are dark.
