Doctrine. That’s almost a dirty word in some quarters, isn’t it? But it’s commended in the Bible and we should follow what’s in the Bible, the whole of it. It is the pattern for our lives.

Titus chapter two verse one. Let’s meditate on this. But as for you teach what accords with sound doctrine.

Now this is Paul writing to Titus and instructing him in how to lead a church. But we can see from this verse that it is important that where we have the responsibility, we teach sound doctrine and that sound doctrine is taught and that we absorb it and learn it.

Back in the time that this was written, there was much conflict in the church over what was the right understanding of the ways of God, over doctrine, many heresies arose. Is that any different today? If we look around us, we see all sorts of heresies being promoted in our churches and online.

I’m not bashing churches here. I’m not bashing people on social media. I’m just reminding us, because the scripture reminds us to come back to sound doctrine.

We will find that sound doctrine. In our Bibles. It’s the first source of knowledge about God and how he wants us to live. And so we teach from that position.

And we can learn what sound doctrine is from the Bible and also from the many saints who have come before us. We don’t dismiss our traditions or our heritage. We simply make sure that those traditions and heritage measure up against the council of Scripture. Anything that doesn’t isn’t sound doctrine.

Paul is very clear on this point, and so we should cling to sound doctrine. We should seek it out. And again, where it’s our responsibility to teach, be that in church or in our families, or even in peer groups, we should make sure that we’re doing that in accordance with scripture. There is no substitute for getting to know the Word better and for asking the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth.
